Circumnavigating Australia in a truck using only electricity in 2024.
Jon Edwards is driving a Hyundai Mighty commercial electric truck using only chargers and power outlets available to the public to circumnavigate Australia, visiting every capital city, a distance of 13,600Km. This is the first time this has bene done in commercial truck. No liquid fossil fuels or generators will be used, rather an onboard battery to self-charge on some stretches where there are no high-speed chargers. Departing Friday 5th September 2024 in Perth and arriving in Whyalla Saturday 5th October 2024. Finishing on Friday the 11thof October back in Perth.
Incompatible filler!! No liquid fossil fuels used on this journey.
Jon says there are three objectives to the Australian Electric Truck Challenge:
- Encourage the uptake of all forms of electric vehicles, be that passenger cars or long-haul transport.
- To showcase the state and countrywide EV charging infrastructure facilitating the full lap without using any liquid fuels, things long thought impossible.
- Engage the community along the way in an important climate change abatement topic.
About the Hyundai Mighty Electric Truck.
This is the first Hyundai Mighty Electric truck sold in Australia and the tray is carrying a portable 120 kwh Setec battery that can charge the truck when transversing remote stretches where there are no public chargers.
The truck and on-board battery be charged through CCS Fast DC charging or three phase charger.
Fully loaded, the truck has a consumption of approx. 50 kWh per 100km, giving the truck a conservative range of 200km. Jon says the plan is to drive for two and a half hours, then stop for a hour or so to charge the truck. The aim is to cover 600Km a day at a speed of 85Km/hr or 7 hours driving.
